The founding committee of the first Coptic secular party in Egypt, dubbed The Free National Coalition Party and presided over by a Muslim legal expert, is to convene its initial meeting in Alexandria on Saturday to discuss recently proposed constitutional amendments

The committee will also discuss the latest sectarian violence against Copts in the wake of a church burning in the village of Sol, located in Helwan, south of Cairo. The attendees will also hash over the bloody clashes between Muslims and Christians in the Moqattam area where at least 13 people were killed and scores injured in recent days.

“We’ve chosen a committee to draft a comprehensive program for the party and its main principles such as the necessity of having a civil state and also the separation between religion and politics,” said party coordinator-general Joseph Malak. “I expect the committee to finish the drafting process within three months.”

Egypt’s Coptic minority accounts for roughly ten percent of Egypt’s 80 million strong population, constituting the largest Christian community in the Middle East.

Copts oft complain of systematic discrimination from the state, especially in the arena of public service employment. They also voice anger over the state's failure to lift bureaucratic restrictions concerning the building and renovating of churches.

In the past, some Coptic activists tried to establish a Coptic party but the religious leadership of the church refused to align with those activists.

But after the Muslim Brotherhood announced they would form a political party, some Coptic activists urged the formation of a party. All major churches in Egypt, however, have denounced the move, calling it a step to ignite sectarianism in the Muslim majority country.

“We are not a Coptic party. We are just a secular party with strong Coptic presence. I tell you that asking you to look at the head of the party, the Muslim legal expert Hesham Sadek,” Malak told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Some prominent members of the party are secular leaders within the Coptic Church itself, such as Fouad Gerges, undersecretary of the Coptic confessional Council, and Kamil Seddiq, secretary of the council.

Other figures who joined the part are Ikram Labib, member of the Tagammu Party Central Committee, and actor Lotfy Labib.

Malak said that all the discussions within the party will be conducted in the framework of citizenship. “We are Egyptians and our aims are to serve the nation.”

EUC: Weak Remake of US College

EUC

Starring:
Malak Kora, Amr Abed, Ahmed Halawa, Mohamed Salam, Lotfy Labib, Karim Kasim
Director:
Akram Farid
Screen Writer:
Omar Gamal

Omar Atef

Omar (Kasim) and his best friend (Salam) find themselves in deep trouble after graduating from high school with extremely low grades that won’t get them into any universities in Egypt. So, they turn to their best friend Moody (Abed) to help them create a fake university called EUC with a fake website in order to appease their furious and worried parents.

When their parents insist on visiting this new university to check it out, they use the villa of Omar’s girlfriend (Koura) as a presentable location for the fake college and hire people to pretend to be students there.

The next day, they discover that thousands of graduates in a similar predicament have also registered on the EUC’s website to apply for the university. They then decide to make a business out of it, call it legit with proper licensing, and have real students instead of the ones that they hired.

While the title seems to be inspired by the American University in Cairo’s acronym, the film’s plot is a direct rip-off from the 2006 US comedy flick Accepted. While remakes or borrowed plots aren’t necessarily a bad thing; in this case, it does weaken the film as a whole and become insultingly predictable for anyone who has seen the original. Unfortunately, the film’s producers didn’t even try to bring any fresh or new ideas to this remake; copying scene by scene from Accepted.

There is very little acting in EUC and few funny moments. The only comic relief comes from Lotfy Labib as Moody’s grandfather, who is bored out of his mind and wants to be part of anything fun, whether it’s legal or not. Even though it’s a comedy, it’s difficult to sense the characters’ concern when they receive the grades that creates this crisis with their families and future. The script is offensively unfunny: unlike Ahmed Mekky’s films, the actors fail to maintain the balance of cracking jokes by using the slang of young Egyptians while still respecting the audience’s intelligence – a real shame!

Egyptian films have copied Hollywood plots before, such as El Ragol El Abiad El Motawaset starring Ahmed Adam and Ezzat Abo Ouf, which was a remake of Nothing to Lose starring Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins. Such remakes can be acceptable if the material and the additional elements are creative enough for an entertaining film, but EUC begs to differ and ends up as a weak remake with poor acting and no creativity.

Who is Safeya? What is the case? Can a young woman stand against the masters of tyranny?
Safeya is from the countryside, she refused to remain silent when everybody is afraid, she screamed against the injustice and refused to sell her principles when everything can be sold, will she suffer the destiny of execution?

This serial is like a challenge for the Arabic audience. It introduces a new vision for the TV Drama that depends on suspense and linking the past and the present by two parallel lines
The first.. for the current dramatic events

The second for the past events and the serial dramatic structure It depends on linking the past events together, as if we are watching two serials inside this single serial where the past and present are integrated together. At the end we will have in mind the main idea which warns us from selling the lands and principles…

“Mansoura” is an orphan girl who works in an orphanage where she defends the rights of the orphans against the corruption of Mrs. Afarem, the orphanage manager. At this point Afarem fabricates a robbery case for her and she will be obliged to flee away from the village to Cairo where she searches for her uncle who had stolen her inheritance nine years ago and escaped.

When she arrives to Cairo, she finds that her uncle is a very poor man who works as a porter for the building “El Ataba EL Hamra” in a poor area and she ends up spending all her money to cure him. The uncle dies later on and she becomes the new porter among other porters in the same district, most are of big mustaches and from Upper Egypt, and she tries to prove herself. She works as a porter, broker, does stuff for the building residents, wash cars and later on turns into a dancer in a night club. The episodes show daily situations between Mansoura and the residents, those residents represent the Egyptian society classes.

The residents of the building include: employers, businessmen, opposite journalist, Member of Parliament, women who work in investing, private teacher, night club singer, fake doctor, modern humbug and others. Some comedy situations happen between Mansoura and those residents and she learns in a few years in Cairo what she has never learnt in her village. Mansoura does a lot of mistakes, but she learns from these mistakes and we see at the end whether she stays in Cairo or goes back to her safe and peaceful village? The serial is a comic one with an open end, as it introduces a number of deep social issues that we live nowadays.
